Atlantis has completed a busy fortnight with a nail-biting finish in the final top gala in the National Arena Swimming League South Division 1 (East) on Saturday night in Gillingham.  Atlantis achieved 5th place in the gala, ensuring a highest-ever 5th place finish in the 18-team division.  Only 5 points separated 3rd and 5th place in a result that was in doubt right up until the final race.

Epsom ended the evening as Division Champions, with Thanet runners-up.  Both teams win promotion to the Premier Division.  The full result was Epsom 214 pts (1st), Thanet 192 pts (2nd), Croydon Amphibians 178 pts (3rd), Chelmsford 176 (4th), Atlantis 173 (5th) and Bromley 111 pts (6th).

Atlantis - accompanied by a large contingent of travelling support armed with specially commissioned flags - did not look out of place competing against the best teams in the division, winning a quarter of the 50 races and showing their class with Cam Lambourne, Sam Carter, Katy Harris, Issy Dunlop, Bex Lobley Kate Windle, Aimee Davies and Beth Britton all scoring impressive wins, with Atlantis also winning 5 of the 16 relays.  It is a measure of the progress, which Atlantis has made under Head Coach Bill Penny’s guidance over the last 5 years that it was almost 7 years to the day that Atlantis finished bottom of the bottom division in the National Swimming League.

Commenting on the result Bill said: “This is a young squad; we had only a couple of swimmers over 15 on the night.  So it’s very satisfying to know that we were still competitive and only a few points away from securing 3rd place. Team Manager Andy Lobley added: “There is a great spirit and togetherness in the team. They have all worked hard and deserve a good Christmas break.  2011 is going to be even busier and full of promise”.

The League gala followed on from the climax of the Atlantis Club Championships, the Xmas Disco and Awards Night both two weeks ago and the Club’s own traditional Christmas Cracker Level 2 Open Meet last Sunday.

No fewer than 22 records tumbled over the three days of competition at the Club Champs.  Age Group winners were: Andy Lobley, Cam Lambourne, Sam Carter, Max Dillon, George Boyle, Edward Hundleby, James Hartley, Ben Stevens, Robert Hartley, Katy Harris, Bex Lobley, Beth Hundleby, Sabrina Watson, Ella Windle, Beth Britton, Kate Windle, Eve Clarke and Maya Magee. The winners of the Club’s Best Boy and Girl Trophies were Cam Lambourne and Bex Lobley and the Most Improved Boy and Girl Trophies went to Matt Fulcher and Kate Windle.

Atlantis swimmers enjoyed themselves at the Cracker, recording 64 PBs, 65 County Qualifying times and winning 44 medals (17 gold).  Maddie Carey (9) made her presence felt on her debut, winning the 50 fly, whilst Cam Lambourne achieved the significant milestone of breaking 2 mins for the first time in 200m free, and also recording a National Qualifying time of 24.98 secs in the 50 free.  Cam, Katy Harris, Beth Britton, Aimee Davies and Kate Windle all won multiple golds.  The final outing of the year for Atlantis national and regional swimmers will be the Hillingdon Level One Long Course Meet next weekend in the UK’s newest 50m pool (there are only just over 20 50 m pools in the entire country)!
