Four Atlantis Horsham swimmers have been selected to take part in 2 major championships next month, following trials over the weekend.

Katy Harris and Cameron Lambourne have been selected to represent Division 12 of the English Schools Swimming Association – which comprises Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset and the Channel Islands – at the English Schools Inter Divisional Championships at Crystal Palace on 23/24th October. This follows impressive swims by both Katy and Cam at the Division 12 Inter-County finals at Southampton on Saturday. Katy won the intermediate girls 100m freestyle and achieved a personal best 28.60 seconds in the girls 50m freestyle. Cam achieved a clean sweep of victories in the junior boys 100m backstroke and freestyle, and the 50m freestyle. Sam Carter, Jonny Blyth and Issy Dunlop also took part and in their first individual competition of the season and helped to secure for Sussex Schools a clear win ahead of Hampshire and Dorset Schools.

On Sunday the first Sussex County senior swimming squad training session took place at K2. The session was used to finalise places in the Sussex team to compete at the National Inter County Team Championships in Sheffield on 18th October. Freestylers Cam Lambourne and Sam Carter have been picked for the boys’ team, while breaststroker Issy Dunlop has been selected for the girls’ team. This is Atlantis’ largest representation yet in the county team.

Atlantis Team Manager Paul Blyth said: “We’re delighted that more of our swimmers are getting the opportunity to compete in national championships. For those competing at this level for the first time, it will give them valuable new experience”.

As part of its continuing development as a competitive swimming club, Atlantis Horsham is introducing regular long course training for its more experienced swimmers who are aiming to compete at regional and national level.

Swimming competitions are divided into short and long course formats. Short course competitions are held in 25m pools and long course in 50m pools. It is important for Atlantis swimmers to gain experience of long course as all of the regional and national competitions are generally held in 50m pools.

On Sunday night Atlantis held the first of its planned regular long course training sessions in the 50m pool at K2 near Crawley. 15 swimmers from Atlantis’ top two squads (Gold and Silver) took part in a lively 2-hour session under the watchful eyes of coaches Paul Blyth and Andy Lobley.
