English Schools Finals Report

1st November 2010

Atlantis Junior Girls Club Captain and Farlington School pupil Issy Dunlop (15) competed on Saturday in the English Schools Swimming Association Inter-Divisional Championships at the Woodside Sports Centre in Watford.

Issy was competing for Division 12, comprising Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset, the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands in the 12-division competition.  The competition brought together some of the best young swimmers in the country, including breaststroker Achieng Ajulu-Bushell, who competed for Great Britain in the European Championships and England in the Commonwealth Games.

Issy helped the inter- girls team and the team as a whole to 5th place in the competition.

Swimming the breaststroke leg in the final of the inter-girls 4 x 50m medley relay, she recorded great split time of 34.74 secs.

She came home second in her heat for the 100m breast in a new short-course personal best time of 1.16.47.  The final presented tough competition, including the eventual winner Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, who was the 2009 girls national BAGCAT champion; 100m and 200m breaststroke gold medallist at this year’s Youth Nationals; and who made her debut for Great Britain at the European Junior Championships in Helsinki in July.

Issy finished in a creditable 6th position in the final, recording another personal best time of 1.16.20 and improving on her qualifying seed position.

Speaking after the race Issy said: “It was quite nerve-wracking to know that you are swimming against such great swimmers.  I was pleased to put in a couple of solid swims and improve my PB.  Above all it was a great learning experience to be able to benchmark my current level against the very best in the country and to know what I have to do if I want to join them”.
