Regional Championships – K2 Crawley

16th June 2010

K2 once again played host to the South East Regional Championships last weekend, the final two days of competition for the age group swimmers from Atlantis SC. With swimmers descending on K2 from as far afield as Jersey and Oxford the competition is always going to be tough. Once again Atlantis stepped upto the mark and more than held their own in the pool. Izzy Harrod (10) produced one of her best swims in the 400M Individual Medley. This is one of the toughest events on the swimming circuit comprising of 100M of each stroke and after starting strongly Izzy battled her way to a very rewarding silver medal. For many of Atlantis younger swimmers this was their first experience of swimming at a major championship and all of them swam really well giving great accounts of themselves.

For Yasmin Hooker (11) her championships were rounded off on Sunday afternoon with her third near miss in her attempts to get her first National Qualifying time. In the 200M backstroke Yasmin missed out by only 0.9 of a second, another near miss but defiantly a national swimmer in the making.

Ella Windle (11) started the final day with a silver medal in the 1500m Freestyle and sealed her championships finishing 3rd in a very tough 200M Freestyle final. Shortly after the event Ella was presented with her plate for finishing 4th overall in the 11year old age group. This is the second year running that Ella has finished in this position establishing her as one of the top swimmers in the South East Region.

A delighted Head Coach Bill Penny said “The Regional’s this year have demonstrated that Atlantis has taken another significant step forward. Our younger swimmers are now competing for the top ten places and pressing on national times. This sets a great foundation for the future”.

Four swimmers from Atlantis head to Scotland next week to swim in the Scottish National Championships and in early July the final round of the Sussex League brings Atlantis up against the top 2 clubs in Sussex for a what promises to be a nail biting evening of action.
