28th April 2010

Sunday 25th April started in glorious sunshine as a large contingent of Atlantis SC headed down to the coast to take part in the Last Chance Regional Qualifier hosted by Littlehampton SC at the Arun Leisure Centre in Bognor Regis. The squad attending saw many swimmers hoping to achieve regional qualifying times and for some of the senior swimmers an opportunity to race having just returned from an intensive training camp in Italy.

Once again the club was not let down and the performances produced some outstanding swims and a whole host of medals. All in all Atlantis managed to achieve 33 regional qualifying times and although some swimmers had already achieved these times it is always good to cement recent good performances. Bringing home a total of 33 Gold, 21 Silver and 11 bronze medals it was a happy team that departed from a very hot Bognor swimming pool.

The coaches were particularly pleased to see Beth Hundleby achieve her regional time in the 200 freestyle after several attempts in the last few months.  Beth’s attitude to training and her will to succeed is rich amongst the swimmers at Atlantis and proves that a lot of effort and hard work gains the results the swimmers strive to achieve.

The club now looks forward to hosting its own meet this Sunday 2nd May where a large representation of Atlantis swimmers will be competing against 27 other teams from Sussex, Surrey, Kent and London.  On the same day 5 of Atlantis’ youth swimmers will be at Crawley's K2 for the South East Regional Youth Championship, which are taking place over the next two weekends.

Towards the end of May sees the start of the Age Group Regionals, where Atlantis will be sending its largest squad in the club’s history – a reflection of the general step-up in the standards of performance at the Club.

Chief Coach Bill Penny said: “This was a very solid performance overall from our swimmers following a very intensive training camp and a long and tiring journey home overland from Italy.  They will all now be looking to push on from here”.
