STRONG START FOR ATLANTIS IN SUSSEX LEAGUE
1st February 2010
Atlantis made the short trip down the A24 on Saturday night to the Aquarena Swimming Pool in Worthing to take part in the first leg of the Sussex League Division 1 series. Fielding a squad missing a clutch of some of Atlantis’ most reliable performers, the team nevertheless pulled together to record a notable and convincing 43-point victory to secure a maximum three league points.
The final result was Atlantis 373, Littlehampton 330 and Worthing 306. Atlantis’ quality was underlined by 33 first place finishes in 55 races, with Worthing winning 12 and Littlehampton 10.
The absence of some of the team’s regular competitors gave a number of younger swimmers the opportunity to shine on the league stage and they did not disappoint, with notable swims among the girls from Aimee Davies, Beth Britton and Eleanor Morris. There were also some gutsy swims from Atlantis’ younger group of boys – George Charter, Tom Kane, Edward Hundleby, Toby Underwood, Andrew Kershaw and Joe Nehme – who had to “swim-up” an age group to fill gaps in the squad and shoulder a larger share of the night’s swimming.
The night was also notable for the league debuts in Atlantis colours of former Crawley and Guildford swimmer Kelci O’Keeffe, who demonstrated her versatility and that she will be a real asset to the squad, and of former Worthing swimmer Katie Butcher, who added strength to the Open age-group. Bex Henly – an Atlantis Master – also returned to competition with great effect, having returned from a period abroad.
New English Schools International Cameron Lambourne achieved the distinction of scoring a perfect ten; over the course of the evening he swam in ten individual and relay races and was a winner in every one.
A delighted Atlantis Chief Coach Bill Penny said at the end: “We were missing a few tonight so I’m pleased by this win, but also by the manner of the win. The team was very focussed and disciplined. And those who came into the team for the first time took their chance well”.
The second round of the Sussex League will be at home for Atlantis at the Pavilions in Horsham on 20th February, when East Grinstead and Hastings will provide the competition.
