21st January 2010

Despite the thawing snow and torrential rain on Saturday night nothing could dampen the atmosphere at the Pavilions. Atlantis SC younger swimmers were competing against 1066, Redhill & Reigate, Beacon, East Grinstead, Littlehampton, Lewes and Tandridge.

This annual gala is run by East Grinstead SC and is a great opportunity for the younger swimmers to gain valuable gala and racing experience. The races were held over short distances of either 25m for the under 11’s and 50m for the under 13’s.  The emphasis of the evening was for the swimmers and crowd to have fun and everyone certainly did that.

With a capacity crowd the gala got off to a great start for Atlantis winning the Breaststroke 8 x 25m Squadron Relay.  The tone was then set for the night as the girls continued with a very high standard of swimming and achieved a remarkable eighteen wins over the whole evening.

The boys performed magnificently despite many of them having to swim up in the older age group and with many of the younger boys competing for the first time in an Inter Club Gala.

Both Atlantis and East Grinstead dominated the evening in the pool.  In a close finish, Atlantis were runners-up, hard on the heels of the winners East Grinstead.

The final results were as follows:

1st    East Grinstead        448
2nd   Atlantis                  433
3rd   Beacon                   370.5
4th   Littlehampton         364
5th   Redhill & Reigate    351
6th   Tanbridge              217
7th   1066                     199
8th   Lewes                    190.5

Paul Blyth Coach commented ‘What a fantastic evening enjoyed by parents and swimmers in a great atmosphere. Our girls were awesome and all the boys gave 100% especially the under 12 team who had to swim up to cover the next age group. Our swimmers and the Club should take great confidence from this Gala and it was valuable experience for all’.
