Atlantis and Tanbridge School swimmer Cameron Lambourne received a fantastic start to the Christmas festivities when a letter from the English Schools’ Swimming Association (ESSA) dropped through his letter-box on Christmas Eve.

The letter from Claire Turner, ESSA’s International Organiser, confirmed Cam’s selection to represent the ESSA England Swimming Team in the Wales, Ireland, Scotland (WISE) Home Nations Schools Swimming International over the weekend of 19th – 21st March.

Cam has been selected to swim in the 100m backstroke and the 100m freestyle.  The format is for each nation to have two swimmers per each individual event.  England will be taking a 40-strong team to the event, which is being held at the Toll Cross 50m pool in Glasgow, with the meet hosted by the Scottish Schools Swimming Association.  Cam’s selection follows his performance at the English Schools Finals at Crystal Palace in October, when he helped Division 12 (East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset, Channel Islands and the Isle of Wight) to a highest ever runners-up spot at the finals.

Cam said: “Hearing this news was a really great early Christmas present.  I injured myself 3 days before the Crystal Palace finals and thought at the time it may have cost me a place in the team.  So this is a real boost and I will be very proud to represent England in Glasgow.”

Cam’s Mum Robyn and Dad Andy said: “We are very proud of Cam’s achievements.  He is putting so much work into his swimming.  He has always had new goals to aim for since he started with Atlantis.  The Sussex League, National Swimming League, representing the county and the region and now England – these are a few of the stepping stones along the way.  He has received wonderful encouragement and support from Bill Penny, his coaching staff at Atlantis and from all the other swimmers at the Club.  His school has also been very understanding about the time off he needs for his swimming”.

Atlantis Chief Coach Bill Penny said: “This is a significant milestone for Cam.  It is well deserved recognition for a lot of hard work and application and some quality swimming over the last 12 months.  It’s also a great day for Atlantis, which now has its first international.”
