Atlantis Flying High At County Championships

9th March 2017

Atlantis Swimming Club has just finished the final weekend of the County Swimming Championships with a flurry of medals and county titles.

Days five and six of a tough period of competition saw the best swimmers in Sussex fight it out in the pool for age group and championship gold medals. Once again K2 was packed to the rafters with enthusiastic supporters for the entire weekend.

Senior girls produced some awesome swimming. The dependable Beth Britton took the Sussex County Championship Open titles in the 200m freestlye and previously the 50m freestyle in an astonishing time of 26.94. She also achieved a respectable 2nd place in the 100m freestyle. Beth’s incredible County swims have resulted in her being selected for the ESSA South East Regional team which takes place in Liverpool this weekend. Zoe Cawsey also produced some excellent swims during her busy schedule of Championship final appearances achieving three Open Championship bronze medals. Lily Davis added an Open Championship silver to her collection while Freya Fulcher was on hand to add two silver medals in the 16 year old 50m and 100m backstroke.

Senior Club Captain, Aiden Sparling appeared to never be out of the pool competing in an Open Championship final for all bar two of his events. Of particular merit was his outstanding 200m fly earning him a Championship Open silver medal, a formidable 200m IM Open Championship bronze and a lightning fast 50m freestyle with a time of 24.90 seconds. His 50m freestyle time puts him just outside the British Gas Swimming Championship qualifying time with 2 more chances in the coming weeks.

Amelia Wright had an incredible weekend, winning gold in the 200m breastroke resulting in her achieving the title of Junior County Champion. Toby Van Der Hut added the 200m backstroke Junior Championship title to the medal haul, proving that dedication and hard work pays off. Matt Boyes also stepped up to the mark with an impressive win in the 17 year old Men’s 200m backstroke.

In the 12 year old girls age group category Amber Ranson continued to win gold after gold, (10 in total!). Ranson showed some tremendous performances by winning many of her events comfortably but also fighting hard when put under pressure and finishing with some incredible swims. Issy Hayes added a further two golds in the 50m and 100m fly to give her a hat trick of golds in the fly events whilst Jacob Davis continued his breastroke domination by adding the 50m breastroke gold medal to his collection.

Youngster Charlie Clarke kept adding to his medal total showing some great potential with a fantastic gold medal in the 200m individual medley. Oliver Colombo also looked in superb form with the highlight of his competition a gold in the 11 year old 50m freestyle.

Head Coach Andy Lobley was delighted with the team’s performance “It has been a great County Championships for Atlantis as a whole and I am really pleased with all the results that everyone has achieved, not just our medal winners. The club is going through a bit of a transformation and we have set a good marker for the future. Many of our youngsters are gaining vital experience swimming at this level and with the support of our coaching team and parents we can look forward to many more successful years at Counties”

The South East Regional competition in May is the next target for many of the club’s top swimmers, whereby hopefully some hard work and dedication will result in some promising placings in the National rankings looking ahead to the Summer.
