Inter-Regional Water Polo Medalists

2nd March 2017

It is, perhaps, one of the best kept secrets in Sussex, that a number of kids who began their aquatics careers with Atlantis, have gone on to play high level water polo, at national, and in at least two instances, junior international level.

For many years Atlantis have been well noted and admired, for the technique, tidiness and economy that is coached in to the club’s swimmers at an early age, and it would seem that this translates well in to the wide variety of hybrid stroke and body positions required for a high level water polo player.

On the weekend of February 26th/27th, while the Sussex County Championships were concluding at K2, the South East Region Under 18 Girls team were in action in the National Inter-Regional tournament, held at the Palatine Leisure Centre, Blackpool.  Amongst the 13 strong SER team was Atlantis swimmer Maddie Wright, along with another recent Atlantis stalwart, Jess Street.  Extraordinarily the SER team included a total of five girls from Millais School.

The SER girls did exceptionally well to come home with Bronze medals, in a sport traditionally dominated by the North West and South West.  In these competitions Scotland, Wales and Ireland enter teams, with our South East girls beating both Wales and Ireland, to reach the semi-finals.

This was Maddie’s last tournament as an SER junior, although she will likely play later this year, and next, for Sussex Under 19s at county level, it is great to see her add a national standard medal to those she has already, from inter county competitions.  Well done Maddie and the SER girls.
