Gaby at the British National Modern Pentathlon Champs

1st July 2016

In February Gabriella Eltham (15), a member of National Development squad, was invited on to the GB World Class Talent Programme for Modern Pentathlon. Modern Pentathlon consists of 5 disciplines: swimming, fencing, horse-riding, shooting and running.

"Last weekend, 26th June, I competed in the British National Modern Pentathlon Championships in Birmingham. I knew it was going to be a tough competition facing experienced athletes, and competing in all five disciplines in one day was going to be exhausting.

The morning began with a 200m swim where I finished tenth.  Next I went on to compete in the combined event starting with a 13 second handicap behind the fastest swimmer.  The combined event starts with a pistol shoot of five shots on target and is immediately followed by an 800m run, this is repeated 3 times; following this I climbed to fifth place.  Next was the fencing which for me is a fairly new discipline, however, on the day I was pleased with my performance and only dropped one place down to sixth.  Finally was the ride.  A horse is drawn for you at random and you are given 15 minutes and four practise fences to familiarize yourself with the horse before jumping a course of 15 show jumps.  I was rather unfortunate in the fact I was given a horse called 'Brian' who was 16.3hh (for those of you who don't know that is very big!).  However despite being rather over horsed I jumped a clear round and moved up to my final position of fourth place.

The weekend was great fun and a fantastic experience for me targeting the areas I need to improve on.  I am excited to compete in the rest of the season."

Gaby's coach Andy is delighted for her "Gaby takes part in a massive amount of different sports and manages her time extremely well. Adding to the fact she made two regional finals at breaststroke this season shows how hard work pays off. Gaby often trains extremely tired but looks after her body and it goes to show that if you do that you can get great results"
