RECORDS TUMBLE AT ATLANTIS CLUB CHAMPS

An incredible 74 records – 43 by the girls and 31 by the boys - were broken over the three evenings of the Atlantis Club Championships, which reached a climax on Saturday evening at the Pavilions.  The Championship events are 50 and 100m in all strokes and 100m IM.

In the girls’ events the new record holders are Kate Windle, who took 8 records in the 9 year old age group; Katie Butcher, 8 in the 25 & over; Katy Harris in 5 in the 16 – 24 y.o.; Ella Windle, 5 in the 11 y.o.; Beth Hundleby, 4 in the 13 y.o.; Isobel Dunlop 3 in the 14 y.o.; Olivia Winter, 3 in the 12 y.o.; Jade Stocker, 2 in the 11 y.o.; Yasmin Hooker, 2 in the 11.y.o.; Beth Britton, 2 in the 10 y.o.; and Emma Dedman, 1 in the 13 y.o.

In the boys’ events records were broken by Toby Underwood, 7 in the 10 y.o. age group; Ben Stevens, 6 in the 8 y.o.; George Boyle, 6 in the 11 y.o.; Sam Carter, 3 in the 13 y.o.; Howard Blyth, 3 in the 15 y.o.; Cam Lambourne, 2 in the 14 y.o.; Jonny Blyth, 2 in the 16 – 24 y.o.; and Chris Tait, 2 in the 25 & over.

Among the girls Kate Windle was the pick of the bunch, smashing the girls’ 9 y.o. 100m breast record by nearly 22 secs and the 100m Fly by over 24 secs.  For the boys, Ben Stevens lopped an impressive 18 secs off the 8 y.o 100m Fly.

Katy Harris time in the 16 – 24 y.o. 100m Free broke a record set by Kirsty Melville, which has stood for nine years.

Katy’s record times in the 100 Free and 50m backstroke, Isobel Dunlop’s in the 50m and 100m breast, Howard Blyth’s in the 50m fly, 50m and 100m breast, and Jonny Blyth’s times were all within the ASA South East Region Youth Qualifying times, though to actually count as a qualifying time they must be repeated at a Licensed meet. 

Overall the 2009 Championships confirm the continued advance of Atlantis as a competitive club, with times improving across the board.

The final age group placings and champions will be announced at the Club’s annual Christmas Disco and Awards’ Night on Friday 4th December at the Holbrook Club, Horsham, two days before Atlantis swimmers take part in the club’s own Level 2 ‘Christmas Cracker’ Licensed Meet at the Pavilions.
