Over the weekend 17 competitive swimmers from Atlantis swimming club travelled to the Olympic Park Aquatic Centre to compete in the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) relay swimming national championships. Although all the swimmers compete for Atlantis on this occasion they represented their school, Millais, The Weald and Farlington.

In order to qualify for the national final the teams had to compete in regional qualification galas then the top 30 teams in England were invited to battle it out at the iconic Olympic venue.

The Atlantis athletes arrived early to prepare and warm up ready for the days swimming heats. From the morning heats the 30 teams were whittled down to the top ten in each age category who would then go on to compete in either the freestyle or medley finals.

Two of the teams made it through to the finals, the junior team of Bex Barber, Ethel Whyman, Ellie Smith and Natasha Duxberry from The Weald, who finished 8th in the medley relay and the intermediate team from Millais Maddie Carey, Freya Fulcher, Eve Clark and Issy Hooker who finished 10th in the freestyle. Both outstanding performances!

The junior team of Emma Morris, Emma Harrison, Anna Templar and Jess Glassford are well placed in their age category to challenge next year, whilst the Farlington girls, Gemma Cumber, Lauren Pedal, Lily Cherriman, Kate Wilson and Gabby Eltham swam well despite being plagued by injury.

Overall head coaches Andy Lobley and Bill Penny were extremely proud to have such a large representation of Atlantis swimmers at a national swimming final.
