Atlantis, Horsham’s competitive swimming club, is building up to its annual Christmas Cracker Open Swimming Meet on Sunday 6th December at the Pavilions in the Park.

The event is in its third year and has become a fixture in the South East’s swimming calendar.  This is the gala’s second year as an Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) Level 2 Licensed Meet.  Level 2 is the highest licence available from the ASA for a 25m pool.  This means that swimmers can only enter the event if they have achieved ASA defined minimum qualifying times.  This ensures a high-quality field of swimmers taking part.  It also means that the times achieved at the meet are official times that can be used to qualify for regional and national championship events and are also fed into the ASA’s national rankings.

The meet this year will comprise 18 events spread over 3 sessions throughout the day – 50m sprint events for boys and girls between 9 – 19 year olds in all four main strokes – back, breast, fly and free, as well as 200m events for boys and girls in all strokes and also a 200m individual medley event.

Atlantis has been inundated with entries and the meet is “sold-out”.  In total there will be over 300 swimmers representing 23 different clubs from Sussex, Surrey, Kent and London making 1300 “splashes” in all.  Making sure that everything runs smoothly on the day will be Roy Pennington, Atlantis’ Vice President and former chairman.  Roy has acquired the well-deserved reputation for running some of the best-organised galas in the region.

This year the meet is being sponsored for the first time by Home Counties Pools and Hot tubs, a local Horsham-based business.  Home Counties MD Craig Trusson will be on hand to present the Top Club Trophy to the top visiting team.  Last year the trophy was won by Shiverers, the Brighton-based swimming club.
