Atlantis Shine in The First Session of the County Winter Competition

27th October 2014

On Sunday, the Sussex County ASA held the first session of its first ever Winter Competition at The Pavilions in the Park, Horsham. This new competition will become an annual event in their newly structured competitive swimming calendar and with its tough qualification times, provides swimmers from across the county a high standard, level 2 event, nice and early in the season.

Earlier in the morning, many of Atlantis’ more advanced swimmers had departed for a week of intense training at their overseas training camp in Lanzarote. However, the club still had 27 swimmers who had qualified for this event and a handful of the senior swimmers were joined by many of the club’s younger talent and they all enjoyed a very successful days swimming.

Atlantis won a total of 32 medals, with 5 swimmers winning Gold. Rebecca Barber was in good form in the 11 year old girls, winning 5 of her events. Beth Britton (15) was also a multiple gold medal winner, with three and they were joined by Jessica Mace (9), Ethel Whyman (11) and Andrew Kershaw (15) who were also event winners. 12 other swimmers were also medal winners, some for the first time at this level of competition.

For the younger swimmers (14 and under) there is also the added prize for top swimmer of each age, across all the events, and at the halfway stage of the competition Atlantis have several swimmers well placed. Olivia Round joins Jessica near the top of the 9 year old girls and Ethel and Rebecca are well placed in the 11 year old girls, whilst Michael Pallister is currently in second place in the 10 year old boys group.

The second half of this competition will again be held in The Pavilions, on Sunday 2nd November and will no doubt be another exciting and successful day for the club.

Jessica Mace, Amber Ransom and Olivia Round won Gold, Silver and Bronze in the 9 year old's 50m Backstroke.
