21st July 2014

On Saturday 19th July three Atlantis swimmers travelled down to Chichester Watersports Lake in Westhampnett to compete in the South-East Region 2014 Open Water championships. It was a beautiful warm sunny day with the water temperature at a warm 24 degrees and thankfully no sign of the storms from the previous two evenings - conditions were perfect.

Yasmin Hooker and George Charter competed over 3000m. Yasmin came home first in the under 17 junior ladies 3000m with a fantastic strong swim in a time of 42.31 to take the South East Regional Gold medal for this age and distance. George came home second in the under 17 junior men in a time of 43.51 in only his second ever open water swim to gain a South East regional silver medal out of a very strong open field.

Rose meanwhile, spurred on by these successes in the morning, competed in the 1500m national qualifying distance for her age. In a time of 20.35 she just missed out on national qualification by approximately 10 meters to the swimmer who took first in a time three and a half minutes quicker than last years swim. However, she still collected a South East Regional bronze medal for the first time out of a very large competitive and talented field.

Three medals from three swims in this ever growing sport what a fantastic achievement for these three swimmers. Well done Yaz, George and Rose! Hopefully next year we will get even more Atlantis swimmers to have a go !!!

Editor's note: Many thanks to Alison Stride for taking the time to send me these details and photos. It makes the articles on the website so much more interesting! And with the younger swimmers competing in the Horsham triathlon, we may well get more swimmers competing next year!
