Atlantis withstand late challenge to finish as runners up.

8th July 2014

On Saturday evening, the Atlantis swimming team travelled to the Prince Regent pool in Brighton for the final round of this seasons Sussex League. Joining them were Crawley Swimming Club and Brighton Swimming Club. All three teams arrived having won their previous league galas, so it would be a battle to decide the top three places in the League. Having won last year, Brighton were seen by some as the favourites but the teams from Atlantis and Crawley had other ideas. Atlantis arrived early and were soon into their preparations and warm-up routines, including donning the now infamous black and yellow warpaint! Once the racing began, it was clear that an exciting evening lay ahead for the teams and spectators alike. After the first ten races, Brighton were trying to take command of the event, but Atlantis were putting in some fantastic swims and were only nine points behind. As the evening progressed, however, Brighton extended their lead, and interest was then diverted to who would take second place. Crawley had slowly closed the gap between themselves and Atlantis, and after 40 races, were only 2 points behind and looking very strong. Suddenly the tension was increased and the Atlantis swimmers needed an even greater effort, if that were possible, in the last 15 races. With great encouragement for each other and fantastic vocal support from the spectators gallery, Atlantis held on to take the Runners Up spot with some clinical relay races. The final points were Brighton 370pts, Atlantis 323pts, Crawley 319pts.

Deputy Head Coach, Andy Lobley, said This evening we saw a fantastic team performance. Our swimmers were under a lot of pressure and together, they performed magnificently. Every swimmer gave their all, and that is illustrated by the fact that we had over 20 personal best swims tonight, with most improving on times that were only set in last weeks gala. That is brilliant, and the coaching team is very proud of them.
