A good start to The County Championships!

25th February 2014

On Sunday 23rd January, the first session of the 2014 County Championships took place at K2 in Crawley. The girls had their 800m freestyle competition whilst the boys were tackling the 1500m freestyle, both long course. 17 Atlantis swimmers took part with the girls starting first and Amelia Wright and Gemma Cumber quickly posted big PB’s to set the tone for a good evening in the pool for the club. More PB’s were to follow including Sophie Lee’s cruise into a Bronze medal place in the 14 year old age group. She was joined at the medal table by Yaz Hooker who grabbed Silver in the 15 year olds and Rose Stride(13) who was denied Gold by just 0.31 seconds, however, Rose’s great swim was rewarded with a Regional qualifying time. Well done Rose!

The boys then warmed up for their gruelling 30 length swims, and in the opening heat Toby van der Hut swam a 15 second PB, made more remarkable by the fact that his entry time was short course and only achieved a month ago! Sam Hawkins followed in the next heat, and was so unlucky to lose his goggles on his dive, but nevertheless continued his race and still managed a PB! There were no medals for the boys unfortunately, but the penultimate heat saw the last of the Atlantis boys, George Charter and Andrew Kershaw side by side in lanes 5 and 6. George took command from the start, and opened up a comfortable 10 metre lead on Andrew which never really changed. Both posted very good improvements on their entry times, and like Toby, Andrew had only swum his entry time in January. George’s time of 18:12.19 was less than 4 seconds away from the Bronze medal.

So a good start for the club, and with a record 68 of our swimmers competing in the next 8 sessions, there are sure to be plenty more great swims to come. For the record, last year we had our best ever results at the Counties, and that was with 58 swimmers!
