It's a Cracker!

3rd December 2013

Over the weekend of 30th November and 1st December Atlantis held its popular Christmas Cracker Open Meet at the Pavillions in Horsham.

This year the event was so popular it was over subscribed by 90% and clubs came from across the South East of England to compete in races across all age groups and races from 50m to 400m. The event is run entirely by a team of dedicated volunteers with the meet opening at 7.30 am and running until 6pm each day. This year the club had numerous kind sponsors including David Wilson Homes.

For the Atlantis swimmers its an opportunity to put all the hard training into practice and try to achieve some personal goals as well as the bonus of County Qualifying Times and possible Regional Qualifying Times and they didn't disappoint.

Saturday started with the girls 400m freestyle event with Junior Girls Club Captain Yasmin Hooker achieving her South East Regional Time and several county qualifying times as well. The events came along quickly and the swimmers kept putting in quality swims and achieving PBs . In total several swimmers achieved their regional times , Rebecca Barber ( 10 ) , Lily Cherriman (13) , James Hartley (13) , Anya Elvin (13) , Matt Fulcher (18) , Lily Davis (14) , Andrew Kershaw (15) and Yasmin added another couple of regional qualifying times for good measure.

After a hard days swimming on the Saturday , tired swimmers turned up on the Sunday to continue the competition and soon started to put in the races and times again. In total 243 county qualifying times were achieved and 16 regional qualifying times , it was an extremely successful open meet for the Atlantis team.

Head Coach Bill Penny commented " there was a great team spirit from the swimmers over the weekend , they really supported each other and got behind their team , we achieved some superb results and its fully justified from the hard work they put in each and every week in the pool"
