The annual Club Championships get under way.
18th October 2013
On Thursday 17th October, the first round of the Club Championships was held at The Pavillions. The pool looked great with the new lane ropes in place, and a nearly full spectator gallery were treated to some great races. For some this was their first time swimming in the club championships, and they did very well and gained some valuable competition experience. For most however, it meant renewing some friendly rivalries and getting some good times and pb's on the board, along with a view to gaining some County Championship qualifying times. And all in all it was a very successful evening of racing, with 50 County qualifying times being achieved. This is a great achievement, and is full justification for having our championships licensed. Also on the night, 4 swimmers posted new Club Championship records. Yasmin Hooker set a new record in the 100m backstroke for 15 year olds, Rebecca Barber broke the existing 100m breaststroke record for 10 year olds, Jacob Davis set a new record for the 50m breaststroke for 9 year olds, and last, but by no means least, Matt Fulcher set a new 100m butterfly record in the 16-24 year old age group. Well done and lets hope to see some more records broken in the next rounds. To see a full list of the Club Championship records click here.
Also on the night, regrettably, there were one or two issues that we hope that, with the help of our swimmers, could be avoided in the future. Could we please take a moment to ask parents to remind their swimmers of the following:
A) The Club Championships should be treated like all other galas, and that the swimmers are representing the club, and should behave accordingly.
B) All swimmers should report to the whipping area in good time for their event, and once there keep the noise to a minimum, especially when hearing the referees whistle to indicate the start of a race. It would be especially helpful if the older swimmers (ie Gold and Silver squad members) could take a little time to help and advise our Penguins and Seals, as they may be a little over-awed or nervous.
C) The taking of photographs using a phone or tablet in and around the changing area or poolside is not allowed. If a swimmer or spectator wants to take photographs, they should register their intent at Reception. Sorry, but this is particularly important as it infringes the club's child protection policy.
We now look forward to the next round that may feel slightly different as it will be held on a Saturday evening. We look forward to seeing you all on November 23rd at 5.30pm.
