Atlantis wins Puffin Gala

11th March 2013

Saturday 9th March saw Horsham Atlantis take part in the annual Puffin Gala run by East Grinstead Swimming Club. It was held at The Pavilions as it has eight lanes to accommodate the teams from across Sussex. Taking part were Mid Sussex Marlins, Crawley, Beacon, Redhill, Littlehampton, Worthing along with Atlantis and East Grinstead. The gala is for 9, 10, 11 and 12 year olds with individual and relay races.

Atlantis had two 8 year olds swimming in Alex Wilkie and Jacob Davis, along with some older swimmers competing for the first time and with some more experienced competitors, it made for a great combination of a team . It was a full house at The Pavilions with the spectator area full and poolside busy with over 250 children cheering for every race.

Some of the older senior swimmers came along to add their support and help the younger ones prepare for their races and it was a great team effort all round. The team had some superb performances with many excellent individual results and personal best times, with wining races from Anna Templar (9) and Robert Hartley (11) , but it was the relay races where Atlantis consistently produced top 3 finishes, which at the half way stage had Atlantis second behind Mid Sussex Marlins. With 52 races on the night , the swimmers kept delivering and it got really exciting as every race counted towards the final result . The Puffin Gala has been running since 1985 and Atlantis finally broker it's duck, edging out Marlins by just 4 points in the end.

Team Manager Matthew Cumber said " The swimmers were really buzzing and to win this gala for the first time in over 20 years is a credit to our youngsters "
