A great start to the County Championships.

The County Championships are held over three weekends at K2 in Crawley and Atlantis Swimming Club has had the most number of entries in its history

The opening weekend of 24th Feb saw the long distance swimmers compete, with girls at 800m and boys 1500m freestyle with some great swims . Some really tough events saw personal bests across the board and Maddy Carey, 11, winning her age group in a time of 10.36.45. Regional qualifying times were recorded from Kate and Ella Windle, Isobel Dunlop and Isobel Davies as well in the 800m freestyle.

The main County championships started over weekend of 2/3 rd March with events covering all main swimming distances from 50m , 100m , 200m and 400m for all age group ranges starting at 9 year olds up to open age group and Atlantis were well represented across the range .

It was a fantastic weekend of swimming for the club who achieved notable success across the age range and swimming distances. In all, the club recorded 38 finalists and 46 South East Regional Qualifying times , with some real success in the girls breastroke and backstroke swimming .

Winning performances were achieved by the following swimmers ..Lily Davies 13 in 50 m breastroke in 36.51 secs and in 200m breaststroke in 2.48.39secs , Ella Windle 14 in 200m freestyle in 2.13.27 and 200m fly in 2.34.91 , Bex Lobley 17 in 100m breaststroke in 1.14.21 and 200m breaststroke in 2.37.59 secs , Edward Hundleby 13 in 400m freestyle in 4.41.18 , Rebecca Barber 10 in 200 breaststroke in 3.23.19 secs and Eleanor Morris 14 in 100 backstroke in 1.06.77.

The 9 year old relay teams for girls on medley took gold , and the boys took silver for freestyle just to add to the final medal tally and rounded off a superb weekend of swimming. With the competition continuing in a fortnight, the club is looking forward to more success. Head Coach Bill Penny said " Once again the swimmers at Atlantis should be really proud of themselves , they have worked hard to achieve these results with some outstanding personal best times and some excellent performances in reaching the finals "
