Sussex League Round 3
11th July 2012
On Saturday evening, our team travelled down to The Prince Regent Swimming Pool for the final round of this yearís Sussex League competition. We were swimming against Brighton and Crawley, and at the start event, all three teams were tied at the top of the league on 6pts, as each team had won their previous two galas. Hence, the evening was set up for an exciting contest that would decide the final top three places in the league.
It is fair to say that going in to the gala, we were not the favourites to win, as we knew Brighton had a very strong squad and Crawley had the potential to call upon some very talented swimmers. Being a relatively small club ourselves, once again, many swimmers were going to have to swim up an age group in several events. But at Atlantis we love a challenge, and our team arrived in good spirits, ready for a good night of racing.
After the first round of races, it was even more evident that it was going to be a tough night, and so it proved. Brighton started strong and just got stronger, and cruised to a relatively comfortable win, and were duly crowned league champions. Crawley did look vulnerable early on, and there was hope that we could battle it out with them for second place, but alas, they had a good set of results mid-way through, and moved comfortably into second place. So we finished third, which although was disappointing on the night, is a very good league position. For the last three years we have finished in the top 3 and have cemented our claim to be one of the top clubs in Sussex.
The evening also gave Bill and Andy food for thought with regards to our performance, and they are already looking at ways in which we can improve as a team. One thing that probably canít be improved on, however, is our team spirit and determination to succeed. Despite it becoming clear that we would be finishing third on the evening, every swimmer kept on swimming hard and trying their best all the way to the last stroke of the last race. Their heads never dropped, and they didnít stop encouraging each other in all the races. Well done team! Now lets work hard in training, listen to our coaches, and be even better next season!
