RECORD WEEKEND FOR ATLANTIS CHRISTMAS CRACKER
28th November 2011
Horsham-based competitive swimming club Atlantis SC broke new ground at the weekend when it held its first ever 2-day Open Meet.
The Atlantis ‘Christmas Cracker’ Meet has become a fixture in the swimming calendar in the run-up to Christmas and this was its fifth year of running. The club had changed the licence for the Meet from a Level 2 (the highest standard in the 25m short course format) to a Level 3 to open it up to a wider range of swimmers who are all at this time of year seeking County Qualifying times. The qualifying times were however set to allow regional and national swimmers to take part too.
The programme encompassed a full range of 32 events from 50m sprints in all strokes to the middle distance 400m free and IM events.
The meet attracted a record entry and a capacity and vocal crowd. 500 swimmers from 31 clubs from 8 counties completed 2350 individual swims. Over the two days there were around 80 Regional qualifying times achieved, numerous County times and a whole host of impressive PBs.
In addition to individual event medals, the swimmers were also competing for the Atlantis Top Club trophy awarded to the visiting club accumulating the most points over the course of the gala. And in the 4 50m sprint events (back, breast, fly and free) the competition was hot to win the “Top Gun” trophies for the swimmers achieving the most points in each age category.
The top visiting team was the current holders, Shiverers SC, Atlantis‘ near neighbours who train in Lancing and Hove, who finished on 4144.5 points ahead of nearest rivals Sutton & Cheam and Mid-Sussex Marlins. Atlantis President Anne Geale presented the trophy to Henry Young, captain of the Shiverers team. However, it was the home club Atlantis who emerged on top of the pile with an impressive 4773.5 points. In all Atlantis swimmers scooped 31 gold, 25 silver and 23 bronze medals and 1 of the Top Gun trophies. They also achieved a total of 133 County Qualifying Times and 27 Regional Qualifying Times.Atlantis Head Coach Bill Penny said: “This 2-day meet was a great advert for Atlantis and for Horsham and was a fantastic team effort by the Club’s volunteers working hand in glove with the Pavilions‘ management. It was no mean logistical feat and we were rewarded by some excellent performances in a wonderful atmosphere. This can only be good for the success of future meets”.
