A depleted Atlantis squad ventured east along to coast on Saturday evening to Hastings to perform in the first of three Sussex League Division 1 galas.  The competition on the night was Brighton and 1066 from Bexhill.

Brighton went into the gala having won their previous two galas against tough opposition in Crawley and Mid Sussex Marlins and needed one more win to confirm their status as this year’s Sussex League Champions.

Atlantis, were missing a clutch of their squad regulars, including senior boys Club Captain, Cameron Lambourne.  However the whole squad rose magnificently to the occasion and pushed the strong Brighton squad all the way to an exciting finish.  In the end Brighton came out on top with 413 points, with Atlantis in second with 386 points and 1066 third on 210 points.

The result leaves Atlantis in 5th position in the 7-team division, with two galas still to go.  With Brighton already deservedly crowned champions, the target for Atlantis now is the equal last year’s runners-up spot.  The next gala is at home at the Pavilions on 25th June, when Atlantis will take on Mid Sussex Marlins and Littlehampton.  The final gala is on 9th July at K2 against last year’s champions Crawley and third placed East Grinstead.

Atlantis will be hoping to be back to near full strength for these galas.

Team Manager Andy Lobley commented: “Well done to Brighton on winning the league.  They were deserved winners on the night.  I was very proud of our squad.  They competed fiercely and in a very sporting manner.  With many missing, our younger swimmers had to swim up an age group and the whole team swam magnificently.  Bring on the next gala!”
